Photographing the George’s Trust Christmas concert

Photography / No Comment / December 19, 2012

On Saturday night, I photographed the George’s Trust Christmas concert in Romsey Abbey on behalf of the trustees. George O’Brien, in whose name it was founded, was a chorister in Romsey Abbey Choir, to which I belong, until his death in 2009 from leukæmia, at the age of just 18.

With music from seven different choirs, concert bands and jazz bands, the event demonstrated just how vibrant the music-making scene is for a market town of only about 17,000 inhabitants. The finale was a truly inspiring sight, with well over 100 performers on stage – and it was wonderful to see Jane O’Brien being able to present a cheque for £45,000 to the Teenage Cancer Trust towards the teenage cancer care unit now being built at Southampton General Hospital.

I avoided using flash and turned the ISO up to 6,400 in order to get sharp images; noise can be controlled whereas bad motion blur can’t. Romsey Abbey is a fantastic building in which to take photos, with its wide Norman arches offering fantastic framing possibilities looking up the nave. I hope you like the photos – and please take a look at the valuable work that George’s Trust is doing, too.
